Ethiopia,  The land of Origin fullest with boasts a sublime landscape, fascinating cultures and tribes, rare animals and iconic wildlife, and some of the best camps in Africa. These are just some of the reasons that Ethiopia an incredible, truly special Lifetime destination.
Ethiopia doesn’t feature on any standard tourist trail, but this exotic and surprising country is ideal for exploring. This Ethiopia holiday is tailor made, and introduces you to the natural beauty, rich culture, long history and friendly people of this country. Visit Ethiopia’s diverse historical attractions, from the monuments, museums and markets of Addis Ababa to the ancient capital of Gonder and the iconic rock churches at Lalibela. Ethiopia’s beautiful, natural landscape is home to endemic wildlife only found here and trekking at the Simien Mountain National Park brings you closer to the spectacular scenery. Continue the Lower Omo Valley which will take you to meet Ethiopia Indigenous Peoples around in the Great Rift Valley in Southwestern Ethiopia and offer a wide variety of indigenous tribal people. The Tribes of lower Omo Valley are believed to be among the most fascinating on the continent of Africa and around the world.

This trip is especially designed for photographers and offers off the beaten tracks and ecological camping to several towns and villages. When you visit the Lower Omo Valley you have the chance to come into contact with the following tribes: Hamer, Kara and Mursi.
You should expect a real adventure! Accommodation in the Lower Omo Valley is rustic, hotels and lodges are generally of a very basic but clean standard. In many places we stay near the tribal villages in basic bush camps.  This gives us the opportunity to have enough time to interact with the tribal people and experience the daily life, the ceremonies and the cultural events. Especially for photographers it is important to gain the trust of the tribal people.  You always learn a few words of the tribal language, the  local guides will help you, and you have plenty of time for your pictures.
The photography level of this expedition is from beginner to advance. At least you should be enthusiastic about photography and eager to learn. The main focus of this tour is portrait photography of the tribes in the villages to capture the daily life, but also important events like markets, dances or rituals. Tribal photography is a very sensitive field in photography, and some of the tribal people react aggressive when a visit of a tourist group looks more like an invasion and they feel hassled by all the cameras. An important part of this photo expedition is to learn to respect each other, to communicate and to interact with the tribal people – the reward is a unique experience and you will see tribal people are in the same way interested in you as you are curious about their culture.

Good To Know

Photo equipment
You are requested to bring your own photo equipment; we recommend a DSLR or a mirrorless camera with interchangeable lenses. But it is also no problem to bring your compact camera with a zoom lens. However, the trip is a photo expedition, so we do not recommend a simple point and shoot camera or a smart phone as your main photo equipment.

Additional suggested items:

  • Enough spare memory cards
  • Extra rechargeable batteries
  • Optional: Small notebook or backup storage device
  • Optional: Tripod, flash, optical filter

Road Conditions
This trip is done in private 5-seater old model 4WD Toyota Land Cruisers. Please keep in mind that the dirt roads of southern Ethiopia are of very poor condition and it can become an exhausting experience to travel on them, especially in Karo and Mursi areas. During dry seasons the roads can become very dusty.
Photography fees and tipping
In Lower Omo Valley tourists are requested to pay for photos. As a guideline you pay for a portrait in a village or on a market about 5 Birr, for a child around 2 or 3 Birr. Please keep in mind that you often have to pay for a single photo. If you push the button 3 times, you have to pay for 3 photos! Especially the Mursi people are famous in counting your shutter clicks and asking for a lot of photo money. To avoid these awkward situations you get assistance of your photo instructor and your local guide. It is often a good idea to agree upon a photo price in advance, like for instance 20 or 30 Birr so that you can make a row of pictures and be sure to get your unique portrait of the tribal people. Usually you pay for a ceremonial event, like for instance a dance or the bull jumping ceremony, and for that fee you can take as much pictures as you like.
Tipping is not compulsory but an expression of satisfaction with the persons who have assisted you on your tour. You may use the following as a guideline, all given in a per client format: restaurant servers: 10% of cost of bill; tour driver US$2 (full day); local guides, camp cook US$1.50-2 (full day); tour leader, photo instructor: $15-20 per week.

Optional Activities
As mentioned in the itinerary we are always looking for interesting ceremonies and cultural events. We offer these events as optional activities, which gives you more budgeting flexibility. You need to know that prices are subject to change and can fluctuate in relation to the number of people on a specific excursion. Not all optional activities listed below may be available. As a rough guideline we list the prices in US dollar (per person).

  • Mursi Donga fight, Mago National Park: $25 – $30
  • Mursi blood drinking ceremony: $25
  • Evangadi "evening dance" in Kaina village: $10
  • Bull Jumping Ceremony in Turmi: $25
  • Anthropological museum in Jinka: $4

Money exchange
ATMs are available in Addis Ababa, and credit cards (VISA only) or debit cards are useful for cash advances. Please keep in mind, that there is no guarantee that your card will actually work in Africa. Do not rely on credit or debit cards as your only source of money, so we recommend you also bring cash.
We also recommend that you try to get small Birr notes on your arrival day. You can get the small notes in a bank near RAS hotel. We recommend enough 1-, 5- and 10 Birr notes, which will come in handy to pay the photography fees in the tribal villages.
